TYPES OF ASSESSMENTS
ABOUT THE TCSM ASSESSMENT EXPERIENCE
Grades, Performance Certificates or Composition Certificates & three levels of diplomas are offered in most disciplines. All TCSM assessments are now operating as remote assessments. The performance assessments focus on the performance aspect of music. The composition certificate assessments focus on the candidates flair and understanding of compositional techniques. For the Grade assessments and diplomas assessments, there is also the additional portfolio of the candidates' musical interests / achievements and experiences -Ideal for the resume / CV! For some of the diploma assessments, there are other additional components which are applicable to the chosen discipline. PERFORMANCE & COMPOSITION CERTIFICATES (Available in most disciplines, including ensembles and Chorister and are available to individual candidates or ensembles who wish only to perform without having to complete any additional component). There are FIVE levels of performance or composition certificate. These assessments are of a similar standard to the performance section of the specified graded assessments listed below. PRELIMINARY CERTIFICATE (approx. Grade 1-2) FOUNDATION CERTIFICATE (approx. Grade 3-4) INTERMEDIATE CERTIFICATE (approx. Grade 5-6) ADVANCED CERTIFICATE (approx. Grade 7) FINAL CERTIFICATE (approx. Grade 8) GRADE ASSESSMENTS ONE to EIGHT The grades 1 – 8 are intended to be of a similar standard to other examination boards and are available in most musical disciplines. EXTERNAL DIPLOMAS Diplomas are available in most disciplines at four levels: CertTCSM, DipTCSM, ATCSM & FTCSM A high standard is required for the performance based diplomas. Email: Three Counties School of Music REPETOIRE CHOICE Candidates are allowed a wide flexibility of repertoire choice for assessments. However, their chosen repertoire MUST be emailed into the school in advance, in order for it to be checked for suitability of standard etc for the chosen level of assessment. CHURCH ORGANIST / MUSIC DIRECTION ASSESSMENTS
The Church Organist & Musical direction diploma qualifications are designed for church organists/ Choir trainers and conductors who are either playing for regular church services or directing and training choirs/ orchestras/ musical groups on a regular basis. Email: Three Counties School of Music FTCSM VIA DISSERTATION Dissertations should be 17,000 - 20,000 words in length and in topics relating to Music or Music and Liturgy. Candidates can also combine an instrument or composition with a shorter dissertation. Topics should be approved in advance by TCSM. The dissertation should include a high standard of:
Email: Three Counties School of Music TAILOR-MADE ASSESSMENTS It is also possible for a candidate who may wish to combine two different musical disciplines for their assessment. For example, a candidate may opt to take an assessment in voice, by combining repertoire from different genres such as Classical, Musical Theatre and Popular music, or they may wish to include more than one instrument, such as combining voice and piano. At diploma level, a candidate may wish to combine a composition / Singer-songwriter portfolio and perform their compositions via a remote assessment. Email: Three Counties School of Music FTCSM - VIA PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENT Candidates, (or a nominating party), should submit a portfolio document in the form of a PDF file that portrays substantial evidence why they believe the candidate should be considered for such an award. Candidates will be expected to have acquired local, national or international recognition in their appropriate field. Their work may be in the field of music, or drama and communication, or both.
