JOHANN HEINRICH PESTALOZZI
CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY (JHPCU)
(ASSOCIATED PARTNER INSTITUTION)
BRIEF HISTORY
Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi Christian University (JHPCU) was founded as a non-profit spiritual and educational corporation, in Miami, Florida, in 2017. The Members of the prior Steering Committee became the University's Board of Directors upon incorporation. In 2016, after a feasibility study, the Steering Committee decided to create and develop a small, selective, studium based university inspired by the spiritual philosophy of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (Father Pestalozzi), the enlightened and visionary later 18th / early 19th century Swiss pedagogist and reformer. Father Pestalozzi is our spiritual guide and the inspiration for our educational philosophy.
Whilst the University is Christian in its character, the University is ecumenical in reach and is not exclusively associated with any particular confessional denomination. The University's Mission and Values Statement may be viewed here. After appropriate filings, in January of 2018, the University was initially granted permission by the Florida State Commission on Independent Education to award its studium based religious degrees inspired by the ideals of Father Pestalozzi.
JHPCU is authorized by its governing regulations to publish scholarly monographs, journals and papers.
Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746 - 1827), was a great Swiss social reformer and educator known as the Father of Enlightened Education. Pestalozzi believed in the deep spiritual potential of every individual human being to learn and grow. Pestalozzi believed that enlightened education should develop the powers of the "Head', "Heart" and "Hands". He believed that a progressive and visionary approach to education would help create good individuals flourishing together in society. Empowering and ennobling every individual to be inspired to learn would improve society and bring peace and security to troubled humanity.
The University's inspired motto is Pestalozzi's celebrated phrase "Das Leben bildet"--It is life itself that educates. The present design of the University's shield (top of page) is influenced by Pestalozzi's own historic shield and pays due homage to his great spiritual and educational legacy.
